What you need to know about the new EU Tyre Label

European Regulation (EC) Nr. 1222/2009 requires all tyres for cars and light commercial vehicles produced after June 2012 and sold within the European Union as of 1 November 2012 to carry a sticker or be presented with a clearly visible label at the point of sale.
Together with other factors that are usually taken into account when making a purchase, the Regulation enables you as a consumer to make a better choice when buying new tyres.

The Tyre Label

The label provides information about the tyre’s characteristics based on three aspects.

 

Rolling resistance

Rolling resistance

A lower rolling resistance has a positive influence on fuel efficiency. Values A to G (except for D, which isn’t used) indicate how the fuel consumption is affected. The black arrow next to the value indicates the product’s performance level.
Although the effect may vary depending on the vehicle and driving conditions, the difference between a Class G and Class A for a complete set of tyres can reduce fuel consumption by up to 7.5%*.

 

 

Wet grip performance

Wet grip performance

In the wet grip category, values A to G (with the exception of D and G which aren’t used) indicate the relative braking distance in wet conditions.

Although the effect may vary depending on the vehicle and driving surface, there are major differences between coming to a halt with a C or A-rated tyre. A car fitted with four A-rated tyres can have a braking distance of up to 30% less: For a normal car driving at 80 km/h, this is equivalent to 18 metres*.

 

External noise levels

The external noise levels are measured in decibels (dBa), and divided into three groups. Tyres with a low noise level cause less noise pollution. NB: External noise is not necessarily related to the sound you hear inside a vehicle.

 

Tyre with a low external noise level; 3dB under the future, more stringent European standard
Tyre with an average external noise level. The rolling sound emissions are within the future limits
Tyre with a higher external noise level; the tyre meets the current European regulation but not the future standard.

By ensuring that your tyres are at the right pressure and regularly checking for optimal fuel efficiency and maximum wet grip, you can have a major influence on fuel savings and traffic safety. An environmentally friendly driving style also has a significant impact on fuel savings, while ensuring that you have sufficient braking distance can be a matter of life and death. It is also worth remembering that the three label criteria, although important, are not the only performance factors. Tyres are tested on a total of over 20 different parameters.
